The Path Was Clear From the Start

The daughter of a sculpture artist, Julia began embracing her own creative spirit at an early age, fashioning jewelry out of the discarded pieces of metal, wire and stone she’d find in her mother’s studio. Simple as they were, Julia’s earliest works laid the foundation for a style of artistry that she still practices today: one that incorporates found objects, celebrates the beauty of imperfection and reflects the natural world with a sense of childlike wonder.

Julia honed her craft at the renowned Anderson Ranch during the summers of 2014-15, augmenting her inherent skill with formal training in centrifugal casting, waxing and carving. Aside from equipping her with necessary hard skills, the school challenged her to allow for and explore the evidence of the hand. “In a day and age where things are mass-produced and molded by machines, there is a realness that comes with something that is handmade,” Julia says. From the subtle traces of a file-mark to the lingering impression of a fingerprint, such reminders add an unmistakable element of the human touch to every piece of Julia’s work.
